Can you imagine being
a member at the Laodicean church when Jesus said they're neither hot, nor cold,
but lukewarm? He follows the penetrating accusation with these words:
"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens
the door, I will come into him and eat with him, and he with me"
(Revelation 3:20). It's common practice, among many, to use this verse when
witnessing to unbelievers. However, doing so uses the verse out of context.
Jesus is not speaking
to unbelievers, but a church in Revelation chapter three, a church that is so
putrid that he wants to vomit her out of his mouth. The door that he is
knocking on is not the door to a building, for the church is not a building,
but the people's hearts. The Lord desires his presence and fullness to invade
the people's lives that make up the church.
Is it possible for
Christ's presence to be absent from a church? The answer is yes. Christ's
church can exist without experiencing the fullness of Christ. The solution to
the lack of Christ's presence and fullness is repentance.
Do you hear Jesus
knocking? He's knocking at the door of hearts every day wanting his presence
and fullness to dwell. He's knocking now, ready to reside, if you turn to him
in repentance and faith.
